Modem problem with Windows

I am having a problem with a relative's computer. I recently replaced a dead modem and have run into a problem, wondering if you guys could help. The modem seems to be having a COM port conflict on the system. I've tried switching COM ports on the modem but no luck. Am I on the right track here or is there something else totally wrong?

Did you uninstall the drivers for the old modem? Check in Device Manger for any problems.
Are you getting an actual error or just not working?

Yes, the other files are gone and the old modem uninstalled. My relative uses netzero and I used their connection wizard and it says that the COM port is being shared. And when I go to query the modem, it says that it is in conflict.

Brand and model modem, please - and list all com ports that show in device manager.

Well, I have tried several things, and while I hate to bring up an old post, it still is not working. I've switched different PCI slots and the only com port being used is COM1. The modem is by default getting installed to COM3 but it says that it is in use and the a conflict can happen, as well, as every other COM port I try.

You'd be best to provide this info first.
