Help! Blue Screen...

I’m running Windows XP on the older computer (bought in 2004).

Ok…ok…I’m getting nowhere fast. One step forward, two steps back.

Now I got a problem with my old notebook. Last night as I went to shut it down, it didn’t want to, so I made the mistake of forcing the shutdown, by holding down the power button.

This morning when I went to fire it up, it would not start properly and went to the page where it allows you to start it in the “safe mode” and other selections.

I tried to start it in all the selections and it gets to the same place everytime, the “blue Screen of death” with the following message:

Registry File Failure

The registry cannot load the hive (file):

\systemroot\system32\config\software

Or its log or alternative

It is corrupt, absent or not writable

Beginning dump of physical memory

Physical memory dump complete

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

The last sentence brings me to you.

Any ideas on how I can get it back?

What operating system is on the notebook?

It isn't my PC so I don't think reinstalling is going to be my first option. I checked out the link and I will give it a shot first. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for your help.
