I want to upgrade to PCI-E, which means a minimum of motherboard and video card. Formating hard drive and reinstalling XP and all drivers would seem nessecary. Will Microsoft allow re-activisation or not. Have I exceeded thier max point system, or co I go for new build and the very special VISTA OS? HO HO HO

Ive swapped mobos's, went to activate windows (of course does not work), and did the "Activate by phone". I called them up and informed them of what i did, the rep then gave me the activation code.

If changing out the motherboard and CPU, you can do what is said in the 3rd post here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522
Works real nice.

XP creates a hardware hash of the current hardware and allows for 6 hardware changes 4 times a year without reactivation. You may have no problems reactivating. However, if you do .. just call the listed number for phone activations and get it reactivated... its a simple procedure.

As Statica said, if you do a fresh install..it is a "Simple Procedure". You call them, give them some numbers. A person will come on, you explain to them what you did....they give you a number to put it, and your all done. All in all, its about a 15 min process.

Thanks to Statica for the link. Oem version looks like dead end with - Gates. I never thought I could get away with a mobo upgrade without paying him. I'm tied up to existing hardware.

I just did a motherboard and CPU repair replacment on my main machine with an OEM XP and it activated with no problems. While waiting for the parts, I actually used the HD in a different PC. In other words, This copy of XP has been in 3 different configurations with no problems.
