using notepad to defrag question
I set up a batch file in notepad to defrag my computer and then used the task scheduler to make it automatic as I read this on one of the PC Mech daily tips. Is it suppose to look like this when defragging? I read that this is suppose to work for XP, which is what I have, but the hard drive doesn't make any sounds, so I think this means it is hanging up and not actually defragging. It just scrolls continuously as shown below in the command prompt:

Well it seems to be working now. I'm not sure why. I had made a few adjusments to my computer before I had the scheduled defrag task fully set up because I ran into a few other problems before the one I asked about above. When I first set up the task, I received a 0x80070005 error. Microsoft has a hotfix for this that I used, but did not correct this problem. I was still getting the error after the hotfix so I did more research and found out that a password needs to be set up for the owner/administrator for the task scheduler to work properly. I had never set one up, so I went in an did this. This took care of the problem of the task scheduler not working properly. After this, the task scheduler did run, but the batch file ran with the scrolling lines I described in my first post. I restarted the computer since then and now the batch file seems to be working because it shows that it analizes the disk first and then defrags on the dos screen. I guess I just needed to restart after the changes I made for it to work properly?? My next question about this is: Does this form of defrag work as well as running the Disk Keeper Lite program. I analized my main drive using the Disk Keeper Lite program later on and it showed that it was slightly fragmented. Do all hard drives stay slightly fragmented after a lot of use even after defragmenting?

I use Diskeeper Pro and use the set it and forget it option. It defrags in the background when it determines it's needed. This is usually daily on this machine. The defrag only takes a couple of minutes.
