MS XML parser error

Everytime I bootup I get a "MS XML parser cannot be found. Please install IE5.5 or higher" error message. I use Firefox and really don't want to update IE. Is there some way to fix this? I have Win98SE with SP2. Thanks.

Install IE 5.5, you don't have to use it.

After downloading and unzipping this 85 meg file, I clicked on Setup and got a "IE 5.5 was not successfully installed" message. How do you install this thing? Thanks.

Put the file in an empty folder and run it. It will make a subfolder and self-extract. Go into the subfolder and run ie5setup.exe.

Before doing that, open IE and click Help - About.......what version is installed right now?

I did that. This thing is just layers upon layers of zip files. When everything is unzipped, I don't see an ie.5.5setup.exe. I do see a file that says "Setup" but like it said, it just gives me an error message. I have IE.5.0 right now. I can't believe it's this complicated to upgrade to IE.5.5?

There should not be zip files in there - there are a bunch of cab files though. The subfolder is named "IE 5.5 SP2 Full" There are 7 .exe's, one .ini, and the rest are .cab. What you need to do is go into your folder options and unhide the extensions for known file types so you can see what you really have. None should be flagged as hidden or system, but while you are in there, unhide those too. Display that folder in list or details mode instead of icon mode so you can read the whole file name. There *IS* a file in there named "ie5setup.exe" which is the one you want to run. If you are using details mode, it's 500kb. I have been using this to update Win98 machines for several years now.
