WARNING - Windows Updates

I downloaded and installed two drivers from MS just now. One of them is an update for VIA- Primary IDE Channel.

I just happen to be using a pc with a VIA chipset....I crashed and burned with a BSOD etc..Was able to boot to Last known configuration.

**** The same drivers where detected on two different Dell pc's....DO NOT INSTALL THEM !!!

I have always recommended that the optional hardware (driver) updates NOT be installed. This isn't the first time - a few years ago a Matrox video driver update killed Win2000. Use manufacturer's drivers, not M$ drivers.

Since when does Dell use Via chipsets? All I've ever seen is Intel and NForce?

The Big issue was that the Update Site was recommending this driver for any and all computers regardless of their chipset...It was removed about an hour after I created this thread.

I too has quite a time with this update. Never could get a normal boot or safe mode just had to go to last known configuration.

I only get the Critical Updates through Windows Update. Everything else I get myself.

Same here...I discovered some time ago that the drivers offered by Microsoft Update, are often a lot older than what's available from the manufacturer's sites.
