No System Information Available?
Hi
I recently reinstalled Windows, and today I wanted to copy my system information to send it to Symantec to get a custom .iso file to launch Norton Ghost. When I clicked on the icon I got a message that said … Can’t collect information. Can not access the Windows Management Instrumentation Software. Windows management files may be moved or missing. Can anyone tell me how I can correct this short of reinstalling Windows again, that's how I got here to start with? This worked before running the remove and replace Windows process. Is this anything that can be reinstalled through “Add Remove Windows Features” on anything like that? I can’t resolve my problems with Ghost until I resolve this. Thanks for the help. Mike |

Have you tried to start it manually? Start --> accessories--> system tools-->system information. Is it possible that the file is not in the default install location?

That's for Win98, PR.......
Control panel, administrative tools, services. Make sure Windows Management Instrumentation is running. |

I suspect 2K or XP because that's what this forum is.

Hi
Sorry this is Windows XPMCE SP2. No that's the problem Windows Management is not running and I can't figurer out how to start it. I'm trying to start System Information from system tools. The files may be in the wrong location, but I don't know why. I just did the Windows reinstall from the Windows CD selecting the remove and restore Windows option. That’s when system information stopped working. Where should the files be and how do I find them. If I know what I'm looking for I may be able to put them where they belong manually. Mike |

Find the service in the services list, double click it, and hit the Start button. The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service must be running to start WMI.
\system32\WBEM\winmgmt.exe is the WMI service. Last edited by glc; 02-20-2007 at 06:30 AM. |

Hi everyone
Thanks for the help. I have tried everything and still no luck. The BeLarc system scanner really works great though; everyone should run this I learned things about my system I never knew before. I located the driver files that are listed in Device Manager for the Nvidia Network Controller and placed them in the .iso file using a program called "Active ISO Control Manager" but when I run the Norton Driver Validation Tool it still says that the drivers for the Nvidia Network Controller are not present. As far as getting System Information to work, I located the winmgmt.exe file in it’s correct location in the Windows tree and when I try and run it from there nothing happens. I am giving up; the whole purpose of this was to have a means of restoring Windows if it crashes. If I am going to have to restore everything again just to get it to work I might as well just take my chances and do it then instead of doing it now. I do have all my files and the whole structure of drive C: backed up on my external drive so I’m not really in danger of losing my data, just the inconvenience of having to go through the whole process of reinstalling all my software (6 zillion programs) in the event of a bad crash. As long as my computer will boot in safe mode I believe that I can use Ghost to restore it. If I get the blue screen of death I’ll just have to start over from scratch. The only thing that really bugs me, is knowing that the configuration that I have backed up is the one that won’t run the Windows Management Tools. I would at least liked to have had a perfect configuration backed up. Actually I guess at worst all I have to do is format C: and then after windows is reinstalled I can still use Ghost to restore my set up and if I ever get this resolved then I will create a new backup file that has everything working. Thanks again for the help Mike |

I dont know if it will detect anything but have you tried running system file checker (sfc.exe)?
