Hi,

I am unsure if this is the case but, having too many startup services and tasks can significantly increase the loading time of Windows. I would also suggest adding more memory and that will speed it up in general, because Windows XP runs most efficiently on 512mb or memory or more.

Hope that helps,

YukonMaster

Have you scanned for viruses (virii?) and malware? You might have something else in there trying to load at startup and taking alot of time to do so.

Can we have the complete system specs for this computer.

Is this a home built or name brand computer?

256MB of RAM is too little to run WinXP efficiently. You should double it to 512MB to keep the system from going to the swap file all the time. 1GB of RAM would be even better.

You might want to run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility on your hard drive just to be sure it doesn't have a lot of bad sectors on it (especially in the boot sector). That will really slow down boot up times.

Boot it up and wait till you have control. Do not open ANYTHING. Then hit ctrl-alt-del and open Task Manager. How many processes are running?

Hello,

Another time I've come across this prob is when Windows can't resolve its name with a DNS service. Is your PC connected to a network? If not, ignore

That is WAY too many processes. You need to clean out your startup list big time.

To get to the Startup tab: Click on the Start button/select RUN/type in MSCONFIG/click on the startup tab. There are a lot of things that don't need to start at boot-up like:Adobe Reader/video & audio software/Utilities or programs for printers,CD or DVD burning software/office programs/etc.

Yes clearing the start up items will quicken the logon loading time but just to confirm, your computer runs through the windows boot screen at a decent pace?

Leave it on selective startup to make your choices about what runs and doesn't run on startup stick.

Reinstall Windows is your best bet because if there is that many processes running, even System processes, that means you probably have a virus. If you have your discs to reinstall, get to it. Make sure anything you can't reinstall by disc or download from the internet is put on a data disk. If you have a burner and would like to reinstall and burn a data disk, I'd suggest www.deepburner.com. Quick and easy tool for burning. That will also make your computer a LOT faster. I am also running XP PRO on 256MB of RAM, but I keep my computer in shape and have it pimped out to recieve very good performance. But yeah, from my experience, 256MB is a little too less for Windows XP, optionally if you have extra cash, upgrade your computer, especially RAM.

No, you cannot assume a virus.

There is no way you need THAT many processes running at STARTUP. Just open programs when you need them. Every one of those startup items has to load in your very limited system memory every time you start up.

Use Black Viper as a guide, I used the Safe list, no problems.

What antivirus do you use? Norton & McAfee can really bog down a PC.
What 19 programs do you say you need loading at Startup?
