Can I re-install W2K and...
Can I reinstall W2K and keep all the files (email etc) and docs on the hdd? I've tried the repair feature with no luck. I'd like to do an install of W2K over the top of the old install but I need to keep everything on the hdd. TIA.

I think your only two choices are the repair install or the clean install which includes reformatting the hard drive. The repair feature is the only one that keeps all programs and files intact. Obviously, reformatting for a clean install wipes the drive. What type of problems are you having, Ron?

I'm getting a blue screen indicating "check for viruses", etc. It starts off with the "INACCESSABLE BOOT DEVICE" error. I ran the Maxtor diagnostics from a floppy and it came back as being a good hhd. Perhaps this computer got a virus. It happened this morning on startup. It was fine on Friday.

Try booting with the 2000 disk and select the first Repair feature that will take you to the Recovery Console. Type chkdsk /r and see if that corrects the problem.
edit: oops! Need a space between chkdsk and /r |

when I try to use the recovery console, it asks me for a admin password and every known password I enter doesn't work. If I use the emergency repair feature, it does not ask me for a password. I've tried this method and it gets to about 35% progress, then I get the same blue screen again.

Did you try just leaving the password blank on Recovery Console?

If you need to do a repair reinstall, make sure you have a 2K CD with SP4 incorporated or slipstreamed. Choose Setup at the first screen, not repair. Then it should find the existing install and allow you to repair it. You will have to reinstall IE6 and about 60 critical updates.

That *should* be okay, but that means you have to reinstall SP4, then IE6, then the gaggle of updates. SP3 should support large IDE. Your antivirus will have to be reinstalled - the repair will break that. Some other apps may need to be reinstalled over the top - but the bottom line is, no DATA loss. Disconnect all peripherals and USB devices except keyboard/mouse to do the repair.

OK, thanks g. Chkdsk came back clean.
So I proceed like I'm doing a Setup, ie, "install"? |

Yep - check the XP repair install thread in Tips and Tricks. It works the same way.

g,
OK, I've booted into Windows using your method and it's now looking for devices. Will I have to reinstall some drivers? |

Yessir. From a hardware standpoint, it's almost a clean install.

g,
Nevermind, I got it going with your advice. Strange, everyting's back to where it was and I didn't have to install any drivers. Thanks! |

Good deal - it knew where to find the existing drivers.
