Is my SATA drive in AHCI mode or not?
I have a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 drive that is SATA II and has NCQ and this is connected to an Asus P5B-VM board.
I have installed Windows XP x64 but I am not sure if the drive is being recogized properly or not. It still appears as DMA-5 on a Primary IDE controller. How would I be able to tell if the drive is recognized as SATA II and connected through AHCI? I looked on the JMicron device, but no sign of the drive. Side note, I installed the Jmicron drivers by pressing F6 when installing Windows. |

That sounds correct to me. What gives you the impression it's not working properly?

2 main reasons:
1st, it is listed as DMA-5, under my Primary controller in Device Manager. 2nd, on my friends SLI board, under the SCSI/RAID controller in Device Manager, it lists his drive and that it is in SATA2 mode. But when I look at my JMicron controller, I see no such thing. Is there some sort of identifying software that would tell me what setting my drive is running at? |

It will only show under the JMicron controller if that's the connector you are using. If it's on the Intel ICH that looks right to me. Your friend's board is DIFFERENT.

I know the board DIFFERENT. I'm just pointing out that it should SHOW in my JMicron controller AND IT DOESN'T! It is showing up as if it were connected on a Parallel connection. So then you are verifying there is something wrong? My friend's board is an Nvidia SLI, so I think his controller has a similar name. Should I maybe reinstall Windows but load the Intel ICH8 driver instead of the JMicron driver when it asks for SCSI or whatever it asks to press F6? |

SATA on an Intel ICH emulates IDE, which is why it's showing that way. That is normal. It CANNOT show under JMicron unless it's physically connected to a JMicron jack. Do you have any benchmarks that show that it's not performing properly?
XP has native support for ICH8 so you don't need any drivers to install Windows on it unless you are using RAID - your JMicron drivers are just sitting there doing nothing. If the Intel drivers are installed in Windows, you are all set. |
