slooowwww winxp startup

computer: IBM Thinkpad t20: P111-866/384 ram/6.5gbhdd

problem: windows gets stuck on startup "welcome" blue screen for 4 minutes then proceeds
normally

discussion: Did fresh xp sp2 install 3/2--also added spybot/avg anti virus and verizon broadband
wireless software--startup was ok until downloaded all the updates---now the startup
sticks on the blue "welcome screen" for abt 4-5 minutes (with no hdd activity
during that stuck period)..then hdd spins and rest of xp loads fine. Once
strarted-and running-xp is fine alebit a bit slow. [I] have only 1 item on startup
(via msconfig) and 24 processes running (ie when hit cntrl-alt-del>processes)--the
problem is apparently being caused by sum portion of the updates?

suggestions!

TX (PS- preupdating: the cpu wld only run at 550 mhz-now running at full 700 mhz speed!)]

Did you update the bios like I suggested in your other thread? The earlier bioses even had problems with Win2K - that laptop was built for 98/ME originally.

May be it is using your CPU more then it should be, have you checked the CPU usage in your Task Manager?

How was your computer running after you installed winxp before installing anti-virus and spybot?

yes----will try the bios updat altho hv nvr done one before!

i take it-this involves: (a) going to ibm site/downloading latest bios update to a floppy
(b) running the bios setup from said floppy..reading all instrux beforehand of course!

the startup sticks on the blue screen which gives the xp logo and says "wndows staring.."..
sticks on that screen for abt 3 minutes

interestingly- i do not hv these problems on my ancient compaq armada with a PII-300 and
only 194 mb ram!--that mach is not side step nor acpi however..

you sholud of done updates first then install the software, use low profile antyvirus pograms such Avg/Agv I get them mixed, try too keep has much pograms off the system tray and reconfigure the services you whant on startup, check of you have the svchost problem, disable automatic updates and just ignore the warnings, keep pograms from using cpu by killing procces on the task manager, to configure services on starup just run MSCONFIG run it on the RUN feature of xp
