Girlfriends Laptop very very slow

Hi all

My girlfriends Laptop (HP nx6125) just started to play up again yesterday (she has only had the laptop since Sept 06 and we have already had to rebuild it once) and its slowed right down, it takes over 5 minutes for Windows XP (Home Edition) to finish all its boot up sequence. I've managed to reduce the number of programs used during startup and some of the unnecessary services that are also loaded, but to no avail. Even the little Windows jingle fails to start correctly - it sounds like a stuck record and keeps stuttering. Would anyone have any ideas as I really don't want to rebuild the whole damn thing again. Oh all the usual scans have been done, virus, spyware etc etc

The spec of the machine is:

HP nx6125
AMD Sempron 3100+
512mb RAM - integrated VGA so that will ovbioulsy be less after that.
60Gb HDD

I've run a HiJackThis scan but I don't really know what to do with it after that (my apologies if I shouldn't have posted this in this section), any help would be gratefully received as I can't think of anything else.

The first 2 things you should do is ditch Norton and Windows Defender. They both give you big background hits.

AVG Free, the Windows firewall, and some manual spyware scanners such as AVG in the free mode (no background protection, not starting with Windows), Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D.

you could run an msconfig and disable some of those proccesses that run on startup.

Found what the problem was - it was to do with the Primary IDE Channel Driver, the transfer rate was changed to PIO which slowed it down considerably, therefore I needed to uninstall and reinstall the Windows driver, now it works fine.......thanks very much for your help though
