viewing images - a problem

Hope i am in the correct forum area:
Received some vacation pics via Outlook attachments They have .dat as a suffix. I can't view these. I've tried to find info on the web; the closest help I find is that the sender may have used the wrong sending format. Becasue they are on vacation, I can't contact them, but I want to see their pics before they come home. Any suggestion for how I can view (and save) these pics? Thanks.

Spoke a friend in the meantime and suggested I just change the .dat suffix to .jpg. That's all it took. Any ideas as to why a jpg file would come through with a dat suffix? Sending computer is windows XP.
