2K wont shutdown or restart

Am new to 2K so please bear with me. I am currently setting up a new machine. Current specs are: Antec SX830 case;Epox D3VA motherboard; 2 PIII850 cpu;512mb Micron pc133 sdram; Matrox G400 video card;Sony 48x cd-rom;Teac512eb cd-rw; floppy; Quantum Fireball AS 7200 hard drive. The hard drive is on the highpoint controller; the cd-rom is primary master and the cd-rw is secondary master. After partioning and formatting I loaded Win98 on primary partion C;installed DX8, installed latest VIA 4in 1's and installed video drivers. No problems. From Win98 I then installed Win2k on partion D;installed SP2; installed DX8;installed latest VIA 4in1's; installed video drivers. No problems. After making sure evrything was working properly and stable, I shut down and installed the cd-rw. Booted to Win98;it found the new drive; everything looks as it should and works properly. Booted into Win2K; it found the new drive; everything looked as it should but now I cant shut sown or restart in Win2K. When I choose either restart or shutdown, all I'm left with is the blue backround and the mouse cursor. The cursor moves but no restart...no shutdown...nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks...sorry this post is so long

What burning software do you have installed there - if this is adaptec Easy CDcreator then you have to remove WMP7.0 or 7.01 from windows it is in conflict with this software..

If not the look in control panel >administrative tools >event viewer - look at the log files and you will eventually find the reason for it..

Thanks for the tip on the Adaptec software. I havent got any software for the burner loaded yet; I just physically installed it...never got around to installing the software. I notice an error in the event log having to do with COM+ whatever that is...thats the only one there.

Thanks

Try to REMOVE the DRIVE from your computer - if you can start then you have a problem with the DRIVE LETTERS because a PHYSICAL DRIVE comes before a LOGICAL drive..then you could install -mechanically- the CDROM again boot up with the Win2k cdrom in the drive selecting from booting off the cdrom in the BIOS and then select repair BOOT of Windows and System files to load Windows if needed... hope this helps
