XP Repair Install

I recently did a repair install on my XP as advised in the security forum. Now I'm trying to get everything updated and i can't install SP2. I download it, and it gets halfway done and says access denied and deletes everything it has done. I have gotten the download from a few different places and it still does this. Any advice. Thanks guys

If that doesn't work you might want to read this too.

I don't know if it would help but you can get SP2 on a CD free from Microsoft. I got one. Sorry I don't have the link to it.

Having the Cd is a nice way to go. It's too big of a download to mess with every time you need it (although in the course of business I probably use it a lot more then you would).

It's nice to have it on a flash drive so there's no disk either...

I believe it's free from microsoft.

i have the download now, but everytime i try to install it it says access denied. I looked into that article and only the first half pertains to me. My log doesn't have the second error. I will check it again, but anymore info would be great. Thanks guys.

Is this XP Home or Pro? And was it installed from a true MS holographic disk or from a copy?

I have not encountered this error in any of the SP2 updates I have done (and that includes about 100).

My first inclination would be to tell you that any computer updating with SP2 should be entirely clean. I'm assuming you have either tried to load this from a clean install or have thoroughly scanned an older install with AV and AS scanners. Clean with ccleaner also.

That would be my guess, because at the end of that article is says if you experience additional problems to repeat the steps. I've never had a computer do this to me though, so I can't really say how many of these things you might end up fixing.

For anyone wanting one, here's the link.

They do charge you shipping, but it's only a few bucks. To me, being on dialup, it's worth it to not have to download that whole thing.

they do charge but i have DSL and i have already downloaded it so that's not the problem. I tried installing it over and over, but those registry keys keep denying access. I change it to allow but right in the middle of the install it changes it back. The two registry keys are ADCCtl.ADCCtl.1 and vnd.ms.radio. Should i try to delete these or what else can i do? thanks for the help guys

I'm about at a loss of what to do next, sktyrhrtout. Only other thing I can think of is to ask if you're sure you are trying to install this while logged in on an administrator account?

Well, they're charging now, because I just went and ordered a copy last night and it says right upfront on the first page that there will be shipping charges. Cost me $3.57 for shipping.

Is this computer clean of malware?

Have you tried running the free program "Regseeker" to clean the registry?

After you run "Regseeker" click on "select all" which will highlight all the selections and then hit your delet button on your keyboard. Regseeker will make a backup of everything and then delet them.

Okay, I ran regseeker, cccleaner, and tuneup utilities registry cleaner multiple times and I'm installing as we speak. We'll see how it goes, but I'm not feeling good about this. I tried another install last night and it stopped due to another registry key. I deleted the other two that were causing the problem and deleted that one too. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the help guys.

okay tried it again, and it failed. The stupid vnd.ms.radio registry key comes back and denies access. I have tried altering the permissions before install and while installing and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions??? I'm at a loss. Thanks guys

I doubt slipstreaming would make any difference. Only thing that does is make it so you don't have to keep swapping out disks during the install procedure. Since it seems to be a permission problem, the slipstream would likely hit the same snag as the regular install you've been trying.

After Googling around some more, I did find one other thing you might try. It was suggested to try installing SP2 in Safe Mode.

Several other sites were recommending going into the registry under the HKCR hive and finding that vnd.ms.radio key and totally deleting it. I don't know what effect that would have, so I'd recommend backing up the registry before deleting that. I checked my own registry (I have XP Home too) and I don't even have that registry entry, so what it's used for, I have no idea. I'd try the install in Safe Mode first though, if you haven't already, then maybe the other idea. That one's up to you though, because messing with the registry can really screw things up worse than they already are sometimes.

You can certainly try doing a repair install with a slipstreamed CD.

okay, i tried deleting that entry and any other one that messes up the install, and the weirdest thing is they just come back in the middle of the install and deny access. I tried installing with a slipstreamed CD and it didn't work, i tried in safe mode and it still is denied. I don't understand how a registry key can be deleted and just come back. There has to be some sort of malware at work. I have done scans with AntiVir in safe mode but i will be using others. Does this resurrecting registry key sound like any virus or trojan or something. Thanks again for the help guys.

Well, it's possible for it to be a virus or something, but as many scans as you've done already you'd think at least ONE of them would've caught it if it was that. Might try running HijackThis and post a log here just to see if there's anything it might catch.

One other thing I ran across while searching.....you said you went to that registry key in question and deleted it and it came right back again. Have you tried right-clicking on that key and selecting Permissions and seeing if it will let you check the "Full Control" box for it?
