I am running Windows XP Professional x64, aka the un-listed, un-supported windows OS.
Well March 13, 2007 they released a SP2 for x64. It is a profound fix, a 350+Mb download. I downloaded and installed mine yesterday. Then for some reason I went to open MSinfo, and it told me "Help and Support" service wasnt running. So I went into Services to turn it on, and Lo and Behold its not there. Gone. I know it was there before SP2. Gone. I rarely use it, so its not a big deal to me. Im not going to uninstall SP2 or System Restore to get it back, I'd much rather have the 350Mb of fixes. I am curious if any other x64 users have encountered this problem? Is it possible to reload a missing service? Im guessing its Microsoft's final way of saying to x64 users "You will get no Help and Support" Don't get me wrong, my x64 system works great. It sees all 4Gb of my Ram and zips along happily. Im betting its still better than Vista right now. I love it and so I put up with it. Sounds like a wife...

As far as support is concerned they are required to support any Professional OS they release for 10 years from date of release. They can't just sell people a $300 retail, $149 OEM OS and not support it.

They are not *required* to support *anything*. They continue support until they want to sunset it. Have you tried getting support for Win2K lately? It's $240 an hour.

There are very few links from the Microsoft website into any real x64 support. Call support for x64 is 59.00 each instance. Hah! Thats why we have this forum.
'Ive found most of my support by looking for Windows Server 2003 support. This seems to be where Microsoft has classified the XP x64 system. Ive been searching for any articles relating to this missing system service, but to no avail. |
