problem saving MP3 files

The computer I use has XP. I regularly download lectures from sites like thersa.com and wgbh forums in MP3 mode for transfer to my portable player. Suddenly, many (not all) of the sites I use, including the two mentioned, insist on being saved in mpeg as movie files as default. I can still change the setting for each lecture manually back to mp3 before downloading, and at least one website still downloads in mp3 as usual. But the dialogue box for most sites when I right click and choose Save Target AS suddenly keeps initially choosing mpeg and movie file. What is going on? Thanks for any help.

Open up the registry editor (START > RUN > regedit)
Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ MIME \ Database \ Content Type \ audio/mp3
What do you see as the extension listed for it .. under
Extension for the right pane. If it is listed as .mpeg double click it and change it to .mp3
Reboot and test.

Thank you Statica. Suggestion didn't help. Extension in registry was already mp3. Discovered that problem was only in one profile of several on this computer. Was also getting a pop-up message "unable to reset web settings" when we explored there. Anyway, since it appears there is some kind of corruption in only one profile, we just took easy way out and created a new profile, ditching the bad one. Thanks again.
