Print Spooler Services Not Running??

Compaq desktop, Lexmark 3n1 printer, digital camera software, running with XP Home as the O/S.
Everything had been running ok until young daughter tried to do something with the printer. I don't know if she was trying to scan or print but now an error message comes up when any printing is attempted or attempting to access the digital camera program.
It reads:
Operation could not be completed. The print-spooler service is not running. There is a circle with a red X in it along with the message.
Went to Administrative Tools>Services and the print spooler is set at automatic so should be starting when the pc is turned on.
Looked at the processes in Taskmanager and there is no Spoolsv.exe listed as running.
She has removed and reinstalled both printer and digital camera to no avail.

I'm missing something. Can anyone help?
TIA
Carl

Can you open the spooler service and start it?

I have kicked this can of worms out of my sight. Each step resulted in more and more error messages, one of which was 1068, Dependancys or whatever. Each attempt to repair the error messages resulted in more error messages, including MS Update KBs.
The biggest problem was trying to do this over the phone and I couldn't get my hands on the pc to work with here. I was afraid I'd cause her to have to nuke and pave. Couple that all up with a person that talks way to fast and you can see my problem.
As usual glc, thanks for trying to give me a hand.
