Windows 95 Memmory boot error

OK, so I'm trying to play this OLD game of mine called Privateer 2 which wont run on windows XP. So after alot of other failures (A windows patch that crashes, DosBox which is too complicated) I got a HD with windows 95 from an old PC of mine. When I boot to that HD it says something like AUTOEXEC.BAT CONFIG.SYS blah blah not enough memory, blah.

So I figure it's freaking out because my PC is too strong?

Hardware
P4 2.8ht
1gig Ram
250gig HD winXP
800MB HD Win95
600watt power
5600 NviDA GeForece

You can't just install a hard drive with a preinstalled operating system on any pc and expect it to work. Each piece of hardware needs the appropriate drivers to communicate with the OS and the hardware has to be supported for that operating system. Many of the newer mobo's won't even support 98 any longer. You need the old pc that hdd came out of to have any chance of making it work. Old games need to be played on old hardware, for the most part.

Hi rockhoward, Hi Panama

rock - when you booted into Win95, was the XP disk still attached? Let us know if you have any trouble booting into XP since then.

There is another possible solution: on your newer, more powerful XP computer, you can try installing Virtual PC 2004 or Virtual PC 2007 -- virtual environments now provided free from Microsoft. [If your XP is Home edition, try Virtual PC 2004, if your XP is the Pro version, you can try either version --- Vista is also supported by Virtual PC 2007]. Basically, you install the older operating system into the virtual environment, following the instructions provided (Virtual PC has good help files).

Virtual PC 2004 SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Virutal PC 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx

Best of luck
. . . Gary

If you could elaborate on all the "blah blah" and post EXACTLY what all the error messages say, we might be able to help you.

Or alternatively install Linux on the machine and use wine to emulate a Windows 95 environment. Chances are, it'll work fine.

Just looked it up, apparently it runs well on Linux/Wine. Might be worth giving it a go?

Alternatively post us the error messages and we may be able to help with getting it to work on Win95.

Instead of installing a new OS to install an emulator to install an old OS, eliminate one step, get Virtual PC 2007 from MS, it's free and works quite well. I've been using it to play Kings Quest VI which goes back a LONG ways to the days before Win95.

At the risk of blowing the hard drive 95 install so it doesn't work on the old machine anymore you could use the [F8] key on bootup to get into safe mode in 95, then into the registry and remove the HKLM ENUM key. That would force ti to rework the loaded drivers to the new machine. I would suspect that you would get a lot of errors because the 95 wouldn't recognize all the hardware but you would probably have SVGA and the mouse drivers which probably would be enough to run the game..
The normal 95 install is to put blank config.sys and autoexec.bat in place. You could probably clean both out with no side effects, or rename them something else (and create new blank ones) so you can restore them if you take the hard drive back to the old machine.
And if you follow the advice, then are forced to take the drive back to the old machine, you would need to do the ENUM thing again with the board change. And you would need the board and any optional I/O drivers to get the 95 back up and running.

I would go one step further, make a full backup of the registry, autoexec and config.sys, then if you have to go back to the old machine, do a little renaming again and everything works as before.

No need, I already know the answer. Just turn on the computer and then blah, blah, blah. After doing that, the game should run fine.

Anyone notice that the OP hasn't said squat since the original post? Kinda hard to help someone when they don't respond to ANY requests for further information.

I hate when that happens.

Not withstanding wondering how the PC booted as there probably arent any drivers in 95 for the hardware, as edfair pointed out..
old DOS games (assuming it's a DOS game based on the probable error message)generally needs extended or XMS ram, which meant monkeying around with autoexec.bat & config.sys

in config.sys enter the following lines:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

then you can load all the devices/drivers in autoexec.bat with the "loadhigh" command & the rest of any config.sys devices with the "devicehigh" command...freeing up conventional ram.

some of those older games could also run via a Dos window...which makes monkeying with the drivers & memory a little easier.

right click on the icon and select "properties:
select "memory" tab and have at it.

i'd like to know, for chuckles & grins" if he got the game to work..
