Can't send mail -- port 25 & 110 problems.

Hi All,

I can receive email from various accounts with no problems. When I attempt to send email, I get the following error:

Quote:
The connection to the server has failed. ..., Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
I get that with my normal email account as well as trying to send Gmail.

I'm running Vista on a laptop. I Googled the error and there seems to be a ton of possiblities but none seems to be related to Vista's "Mail."

I ran "netstat -an" per MS's article found here and those two ports are not listed and I get the impression they should be.

I turned off Window's firewall with no change. I have no idea what could be blocking those two port, or where to find how to turn them back on.

I'm also running AVG 7.5.

Help Please !?!

TIA

TR

Most likely cause is that your ISP is blocking it. You need to use your ISP's SMTP server.

I've been using different "hotspots" as I've been on the road, but right now I'm hooked up to a secure cable connection, all with the same problem. I didn't try sending mail on this laptop before I left, only testing receiving email, so I can't say if it worked.

Are there any places / settings in Vista somewhere I can check? Just a hunch that it's something easy that I don't know about.

Most ISP's block port 25 to prevent use of 3rd party SMTP. The only way for you to send mail on the road is webmail or with a SMTP that uses an alternate port. Example - I use an Earthlink connection but I have my own domain e-mail. Until I recently changed hosts, I could not use my domain host's SMTP, I had to use the Earthlink SMTP. My new host has a Port 26 server available, that will work. Some ISP's have alternate servers, most often they are Port 587 and require secure authentication.

You hit the nail on the proverbial head. A quick call to my new temporary ISP got the correct SMTP server info, I plugged it in, and have joy now!

Thanks All !!

Amen, TR. Been doing the outside sales gig for nigh on 25 years now. It stopped being fun a long time ago. Being in Industrial Sales in Michigan with so many factories leaving/closing/filing Chapter 11 has made it more than work. Retirement and computer repair is looking better every day.

I can easily see how it stopped being fun, PR. I had a lot of fun traveling in my earlier days, but it was on my terms. Heck, once I even moved from one state to another on a weekend's whim. Sadly, this trip is not by my choice so it's even less enjoyable from that standpoint.
