Transferring Xp to new HD
For my new computer I would like to install Xp on it, however Xp is currently located on a p.o.s. maxtor IDE 38gb 5400rpm drive so I want to put it on a seagate sata drive and was wondering how I'd go about this. But my main question is that I want only Xp to be transferred to my new hard drive and was wondering if that was possible?(The new drive will be going into an completely different computer that I'm building) I have heard that you can call MS and say you reformatted your hard drive and need an install key to use with the reinstall disc, but I'm not sure if that's legal.

You should have the original install key that came with XP. They don't just give out free CD keys. If you have the CD with the KEY you should install XP and then install the second HDD and copy the files you need.

If you have 2 computers and want them both to work, you need 2 copies of XP. If you are doing something else with the old computer, then you can legally transfer the license to the new one. Install XP on the new drive in the new computer from your original CD, using your CD key, and you should be able to get a reactivation with no problem. However, if your XP is a name brand manufacturer's preload or a recovery CD, you cannot transfer it to a new self-build.
