Unhappy ** Automatic Updates **

Hi All:

I had to run System Restore yesterday and I had to go back to Feb. 28 for some reason before it would restore.

Since then, Automatic Updated wants to install continuously one after the other, then I noticed that it always says the same thing "Installing Update for Windows XP (KB929338)(update 1 of 1)...

I shut off the Automatic Updates and rebooted and then turned Automatic Updates back on, but that didn't help, it still wants to install (KB929338).

Shouldn't these update numbers change with each new update?

Your help will be very much appreciated, and thanks ahead of time.

OS: WinXP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, Pentium 2.40GHz, 512Mb Ram.

End the Automatic Updates service by going to Start > Run > services.msc.

Once the service has stopped, go to %windir%\SoftwareDistribution. Delete the entire Download folder and start the Automatic Update service again.

What this will do is delete all downloaded files for each update and force it to download the files again. It'll probably find that update again, but it should stop it from trying to install over and over again.

Hi PCBrandon:

Well that didn't work, it still wants to continuously download that ((KB929338), I ran the updates three times then looked in the Download folder, and there is only one file in there,
"3211116c3ab1e0da28f96fd6d81ebbaa".

I'm sure I followed your instructions to the letter.

What do you think now?

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Is that update showing in the Add/Remove programs list? If so, Uninstall it. Then see what happens when you go to Windows Update and run the updates from there. Also, run>msconfig and see if there's a reminder notice in the Startup tab for Windows Updates. If so, uncheck it.

Hi PCBrandon & Panama Red:

After my last post I shut the computer down for about six hours, when I turned it on the little yellow shield didn't show up, so I made sure the Automatic Update was on, it was.

I checked the Download folder and this time it had the "3211116c3ab1e0da28f96fd6d81ebbaa folder" plus three more files.

It looks like everything is okay now.

I'll leave things alone for now, and see what happens between now and the next time it updates.

Anyway, thanks a whole bunch !!

P.S. In Add/Remove programs it shows "Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803), I guess thats the file you were talking about Panama Red. Also I didn't see any reminder notice in the Startup tab when I ran "msconfig"

You have to check the Show Updates box to see the updates.
