XP continuously reboots....
OK, this is exactly what is happening and the order of what I did...
1. Transferred contents of old drive, Maxtor 60gb ide, to new drive Seagate 250gb 7200.10 SATA. 2. Upgraded to XP pro 3. Everything was running great until this morning when I installed updates xp had notified me of. 4. XP now continuously reboots at startup screen with no ability to access in any mode 5. Did full install of XP on old drive and can boot on that drive and have access to all files on new drive as well. 6. Ran chkdsk, no problems. I think there must have been a problem with the update? sound about right? Is there any way I can manually remove these updates or another way of getting into XP on my new drive. There is a lot of info in this drive and I want to get back in without a fresh install if possible. Remaining specs are in sig, I did check all components and all are good. |

Can you get to the Safe Mode boot option by tapping F8 during boot up? There you should find a couple options that may work. One would be to turn off the auto reboot on error. That may be causing the boot loop. If that works, go to Add/Remove programs, select the show Windows updates option and uninstall the last known update that you suspect to have caused the damge.
Second option in the boot up is to use the Restore to Last Known Good Configuration. Third option, if you get into Windows, use System Restore to pick a point to Restore to that is before that problematic update. |

I've had similar problems with my new (BYO) PC. I was in a process of loading a couple of softwares and updating drivers when my computer started to continuously reboot. I went to the Safe Mode and tried System Restore but no joy. Finally, after conferring with a few afficionados, I found out that I had a defective memory (1 Ghz DDR2 PC6400). I replaced the RAM and everything works OK now. But you said you alreadu checked out all your other components so my case may not be relevant.

Yes, all components are good, well I assume they are good I could load XP onto my Maxtor 60gb, but the corrupted version on my new Seagate was not working. I did things the lazy way, copied all my important stuff back onto my Maxtor with the good install of XP and then transferred that drive to my new Seagate. I didn't feel like buying a floppy or doing another fresh install. Everything is working great now, but I haven't dared to do another update of XP yet.
