Logged on as Administrator in Startup Tab: "An Access Error was Returned..."

I'm running XP Medai Center with a fresh install. I was trying uncheck several items in the Startup menu but after I click Apply I get the message "An Error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to be logged using an Administrator account to make the specified change".

This message pops up if I try to uncheck ANY service. I am already logged in as an administartor. Simple file sharing is checked in the folder options.

I tried a search on Microsoft's help site but couldn't find anything dealing with dealing with this specific problem, unless I used the wrong search parameters. I've installed XP plenty of times but never had this problem.

Is there something I need to change in regedit?

Thanks in advance

Maybe I'm confused. You say "uncheck..items in the Startup menu" but then you talk about changing a service. Services aren't controlled by the Startup menu in the Task Manager. That's where you shut down non-essential programs to prevent them from running in the background at startup. If you want to change any Services, use: Run>services.msc and select the services there to change whether they run Manually, Automatically or are Disabled.

Yes.

Sorry for the confusion. I said "sevices" because that's what the message said.

Are you using an HP printer? That looks like the cause of others having the same issue. See here:

Read all of that thread for possible solutions.

Yes I just bought an new HP printer last week!
I was a bit leary about deleting the entries in regedit so I called HP tech support but they could solve my particular problem either.

I then followed the steps in the second from last post in that link you provided and I was able to check/uncheck the boxes in msconfig/startup tab without the error window popping up but some programs just wouldn't shut down after reboot! I went back in the startup tab and they were checked again.

I decided to reformat/reinstall XP. It wasn't a big deal since I didn't have any programs installed anyway.

I'm glad you posted that info and I will now install ONLY the HP driver! I don't need all that other crap anyway.

Thanks
