Long Login
Hi:
Another interesting problem. My computer boots great, shuts down great, and overall has been running quite smoothly. However, there is one thing that doesn't go so great, the point between loging into my account and being able to use my computer (XP). The desktop loads fine, and in fact I can click around, and occasionally even open things, but it is lagging for about two minutes. I've tried all the obvious stuff: fonts, defrag, spyware, etc. I'm pretty confident it's a service or program being called on startup. I have nothing all that weird in my startup, and I've turned off a lot of services. But it loads some things (my antivirus for example) when I log in, then the stall happens, and a minute or so later, the rest of the stuff comes up. I think something is causing a jam in my startup, but I don't know what. Is there any program or something that could help me identify the problem, or any other suggestions (other than to try stopping every single program I use on bootup or service)? Thanks, Graeme |

Does this happen on a wireless connection or wired connection? Are you logging into a domain or is this on your home computer?

Open up Start > Run... > Type "msconfig" without quotes > Startup tab > Uncheck any unwanted programs starting up on startup. Most of the time slow startups are caused by tons of spyware opening up on computer reboot, are you sure your computer is spyware/malware free?

I'll run the spyware scans again, but I'm quite confident the computer's very clean. I'm so sure that it's just one small thing that's gone wrong and it's causing a bottleneck on startup. But I'm having trouble eliminating what the problem is. |
