Question Another XP Install Question ::)

Hey guys.. Just wondering If I could use my OEM XP Home on my new computer since I will be selling my old one, and I don't have the money right now to buy another Windows XP.. The XP Home Disk came with my old computer a guy built for us a while back ago.. Its XP Home SP1 Version 2002, but I can always get the SP2.. Just wondering, I heard you could reactivate this somehow? or is this for only the retail version? If so, How do I do this???

Please leave some feedback, Thanks!

[Edit- BTW, my Build thread, I ordered my parts the otherday, and should be here by Friday or Monday..

If you sell the old pc with XP installed, that disk should go with it. Legally you can not install it on another pc. One disk/product key per pc according to the EULA. If you sell the old one minus the XP install, you can reuse it.

Thanks

[Moderator edit: poster intends to sell the existing computer without an operating system installed, and use the copy on his new machine - clarified over PM]

What you paid for is the licence to install ONE copy of the software on ONE machine. If you sell the computer that has the copy of XP installed on it, and then install that same copy on your new machine, then either you or the person you're selling to is no longer legal.

EDIT: Thread re-opened after clarification from original poster, see above

If it's been removed from the original computer - and you have both the disc and the licence key, then there's no reason why you can't install it on your new one. You MAY have to call Microsoft during the activation process, inform the rep that the copy is installed on only one system and it should be activated for you.

The only exception to this that I'm aware of, is if the copy was originally installed on a brand name computer - a DELL or Compaq for instance. These copies are tied to the original system and cannot be re-used.

If that IS HP OEM software it's about a 50/50 shot. Sometimes they will activate it, sometimes not. If it's a retail OEM version (purchased seperately from the computer), you are good to go. You've got nothing to lose by trying (except the time invloved in installing the OS).
