open a cmd window by typing 'cmd' from the Run prompt, then

type "chkdsk" followed by the drive you want to defrag: "C:" then the "/f" and see what it says. The command will look like:

chkdsk c: /f

okay.i tried this in the run command and another problem exists. [ckkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?] typed in yes. restarted system, try to defrag and another error.[this version of disk defragmenter does not support running more than one instance] not sure what this means.

The first message is normal for your Windows drive. The second message where it can't run more than one instance is not normal. I've heard of the problem before but don't know the fix. I spent some time Googling and searching MS's KB but haven't found a fix yet...

Anybody else have an idea?

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
If a chkdsk is already scheduled to run, did you try rebooting to see if it will, in fact, run? Once you request a chkdsk of the C: drive you have to reboot so it will perform the task.
