Unknown Device in Device Manger
I replaced the hard drive (Seagate 250 GB) in my sister's computer because the one in there failed. After installing Windows Media Center and all the updates, an unknown deviice appears in Device manager. I am unable to correct the problem. I have unistalled it and when the computer reboots it says new hardware found and I click to install the drivers, but I get the message "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software." I am not sure what hardware this is referring to. I built the computer for her about 2 years ago. It has an Intel D915GEV motherboard with onboard video. An Intel P-4 3 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM running dual channel. An Antec Solution SLK 1650B case and a Lite-ON DVD burner. I have not installed any addtional hardware. How can I find out what this hardware is that Windows is referring to and correct this problem? Thanks.

Have you looked in the Device Manager to see if there are any Exclamation or Question marks? You can get there by pressing the Windows + Pause keys in other versions of Windows, never tried that shortcut in WMC though...

Yes, I have looked in the device manager and that is where the problem is. There is a yellow "?" for other devices and then when I double click other devices a yellow "?" appears with unknown device. This is what I have uninstalled and when I restart the computer the nessage displays found new hardware and is unable to install the software. I don't know what device it is trying to install software for. This is what I am trying to correct. I am sorry for not being more clear.

Thanks Panama Red. I ran the program, but I could not determine what the problem device is. I think that it is because I am not sure what I am looking for or I am just missing something.

Compare what you see in the program with what you see in the Device Manager. Anything different is probably the "new" device. BTW, did you use the mobo disk and install all the drivers from there?

Yes, I used the motherboard disk and installed all the drivers off of it. I will run that program again later and compare both lists. Thanks.
