XP Switch to new Build?

I think I remember a few years ago when XP came out, that if you rebuilt your machine and wanted to reinstall XP on the new rebbuilt machine, you could call or email Microsoft to get the XP liscense changed?

Is this still correct, and what is the process of doing this?

I might be rebuilding my current machine, and don't want to use my current XP liscense.

This is my only machine, so it isn't like I will be installing XP on two machines. Just retiring the old machine.

thanks.

If you have a Retail or OEM copy that you bought yourself (i.e, was not supplied with a pre-built brand name computer) - then yes, you can legally transfer it to your new system. You can use the disk to do a complete fresh install on the new system - it should activate over the web, or if not, over the telephone. You'd need to confirm to the MS rep that the copy was installed on just one machine.

I did the exact thing that Freakitchen mentioned above. It took a simple phone call.
