HDD thrashing with win XP-home startup
hi sll
i have an IBM T20 notebook (PIII-700/384 ram/30gbhdd) with fresh winxp-home installation. I notice hdd thrashes for about 2 minutes at initial power-on before OS ready to use . only background running programs= spybot and zone alarm. drive has been defragged/and checked for spyware/viruses (none of either). question= want to reduce amount of thrashing and shorten startup time. suggestions! Not sure what the question is.
Are you wanting to reduce the two minute part?

Probably not a lot that you can do with a laptop that old other than get a new one. You could find out which programs are loading on startup, the most obvious source of your thrashing, and eliminate some of them.

With your system specs you really are going to have to live with some amount of thrashing. Installing XP on systems less than about a gig on the processor and 512MB on RAM can be painful. Would really recommend something like Win2k if that is an option.
To reduce startup time .. one option is to turn off nearly every service that is optional .. a good list can be found: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm |

Disable system restore and the indexing service.
