system file missing

Hi all. The wifes brought home a work pc thats not working . Its a ibm thinkpad , both usb,s are damaged and upon boot , i get this error message . \windows\system\config\system

Is there any way to repair it without using the repair option on an xp disk because the usbs are not seeing the external cd drive.

Cheers

The only way you are going to fix that is pull the hard drive and stick it in another computer with an adapter. It may not be cost effective to fix that thing if the usb's are broken too, the odds of the hard drive having bad sectors with that error are quite high.

Ob1, read the post a bit more carefully - booting with the CD is not an option and the OP has requested a solution that does not involve booting the laptop with the CD.
