instructions for sluggish computer

Is there a thread anywhere in the forums for steps to go through if a computer is performing really poorly/slowly (similar to the steps to follow if your new build does not work). So if one is not sure why a computer is so slow, a checklist to go through. thanks

We don't have a list stickied anywhere, but you can probably find some suggestions with a forum search.

Here is a general list though:
1. What are the computer's specs? A system with too little ram can be slow.
2. Defragment the hard drive.
3. Turn off startup processes with msconfig.
4. Run AV/Anti-spyware programs.
5. Run CCleaner.

If no improvement after those 5 steps, post a HJT log, if still slow- Norton & McAfee are known to really bog down some PCs.
