Windows XP Services Help

Ok, newbie with a question. I'm doing this for a friend that runs her own business through her computer so she is pretty desperate for help. I can usually figure out small things, but this really stumped me while I was working on it last night.

The computer basically went down all at the same time. The network connections all got deleted, I can't get into the user accounts in the control panel, get into the firewall, etc. I kept getting Error 1068, which I believe ended up meaning that the service needed to run them, wasn't started.

So, I tried starting the service. (ICS) service. It wouldnt start, saying a dependancy service was not started. I've been trying to figure out what the "dependancy service" is, but I'm stumped. I've also read that it could be a registry error, that is causing these services not to start.

Any ideas? She is pretty desperate for help.

Thank you
Taylor

control panel-->administrative tools--> services --> right click the service you are interested in and click properties---> you will then see a dependencies tab which will list all services that particular service depends on.

Just like when I try to start the new network wizard, the hour glass comes on for a split second, then it goes away. I can't get into the properties.

Nothing at all comes up. Its that way for a lot of things. What would cause that?

not sure, try doing a system restore back to a time when everything worked. I would also do a virus scan.

Her windows system restore actually is turned off... not sure why or how it got that way. I was thinking about putting in a Windows XP cd, and doing the repair that way... but she has a lot of files she CAN NOT lose, so I'm a little weary.

just backup all of her important data and perform a repair install.

here are good instructions on how to do so.

I'd do as suggested and try the repair install first. Doing a repair install should NOT make her lose any vital information but it is a good idea to back up said data anyway. Sometimes it DOES get lost on a repair.
The original problem may be related to malware, however, so make absolutely certain the system is clean after doing the repair.

What anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are running on this computer? If any, are they updated with current definitions? Is ccleaner or any other cleanup program being useed? If not go to www.download.com, install and update all of the programs in my signature then boot into safe mode and run all programs.
