Busy hourglass pointer

I've noticed a sometimes while I'm using my computer that my pointer doesn't show just the pointer, but it shows the busy hourglass pointer. This happens not just while I'm waiting for something to happen like a web page to load, but sometimes for no reason it will show this pointer. I can understand this busy hourglass pointer showing if you've clicked a link and you have to wait for a second or two for something to happen, but what does it mean when this shows for no apparent reason? Is there a background process going on or something that shouldn't be?

Very possible. Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and take a look at the processes tab for something using your CPU.

Do you have any programs running in the background, such as virus scanners, desktop search, etc?

Scanned for malware lately?

Your computer sounds like a good candidate for a full system virus scan and anti-spyware scans.

Download the programs in my signature, update them and run them all.
