Bought a new HP dx2300 XP Pro system @ Newegg for my Dad.
Uninstalled some "trial programs" from the hd- MS Office, Symantic antivirus, etc. Loaded open office,AVG,spybot, adobe 8, installed old modem card Aztech MDP7800-U from his old Win.98 system (XP gave it a lucent driver and says its fine - nothing in device mgr) Everything worked fine until it connected to the internet. Something communicated and now the system hangs @ shutdown. Looked at event log, device mgr. hardware etc. Finally went into msconfig to diagnose this. I know how to play around with start-up programs but nothing about system.ini These are the files I found that make the system hang at shutdown: (shutdown=lockup of mouse/keyboard, must hold pwr button in to manually turn off) for 16-bit app support wave=mmdrv.dll timer=timer.drv mci driver 32 [386enh] area where the following files hang the system: EGA40W0A.FON=EGA40W0A.FON CGA80W0A.FON=CGA80W0A.FON CGA40W0a.FON=CGA40W0A.FON Would any experienced system.ini person be able to help me in defining what they are, and how to "fix" system.ini from hanging at shutdown? I have them turned off in his system now - hate to screw around wtih a new system that there should be no issues.... Thanks for your replies! Last edited by ryoko; 04-30-2007 at 01:30 PM. |

system.ini all disabled, need help with HP cd's...?
Went over to check on the computer and found it wasn't shutting down again. Found I have to disable ALL of system.ini. Again no problem with Start up, Services, or win.ini. Nothing in device mgr. Event viewer. etc.
I was horrified to discover that system restore was turned off when we received this computer. I didn't think to check it was enable when we received it. This is where I hate buying pre-packaged software computers. Does anyone have exp. with the HP computers on these recovery disks, etc. I created all of them upon receiving computer. I assume I'm going to have to go back and load them up hoping this will fix the system.ini. |
