Create File Association

I often tried to save website information by using the Desktop. But I clickedon the icon the following message appeared: " This file does not have a program associated with it performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option in Control Panel. I did that but was unable to create the association. Can anyone explain?
Further, what is the best way to save website information? For example I found information regarding Castillian cooking but when create a destop icon, I get the above warning.

If you are simply saving a website address, right click on the file and select "open with" and then select internet exporer from the list.

If you are trying to save downloaded files (Adobe PDF, Macromedia Flash, windows media player, Quick Time, etc.) you will have to choose the appropriate file association (assuming you have the right program installed on your computer).

File Association

There is a long list of file association. How will I know which one is appropriate?

If it's a text file, use an application like Word, or notepad or wordpad. If it is a picture or graphics, use windows picture and fax viewer (or whatever photo editing program you have installed) etc...
