can i burn my w98se to a cd. if so how. do i have to do something exter or just copy and it will be bootable. are there any web sites or a forum you can point me to.

thanks,
tazpaige

i need to add that i no longer have my w98se cd that came with the 466id emachine. i would like to backup the w98 off the harddrive to a cd burner. i think a cd is too small to hold it all? thanks

Use an imaging software and image your harddrive to another harddrive for backup purposes only. That the only legal reason you can do that.

ktkendall, are you saying i can not backup just the w98 part of my drive. i am giving the 466idemachine to keds and i know i will end up having to reinstall w98se. i am not worried about any file except for those of the os system. i would like to have a bootable w98se cd. i still have my product key for the 98 cd....but not the cd. thanks tazpaige

Yes ktkendall is correct use an imaging software to clone your HDD. You use Norton Ghost or any other imaging software. Thats the best way to make it bootable you can just uninstall or delete the files later after you clone your HDD

98se

Hi TazPaige. this won't help now, but when I tried initially to back up my Win98SE CD, had problems.. I think Microsoft protects their OS CDs some way so they don't back up easily. I found a work-around. I copied the whole 98SE Cd to the hard drive (I used a separate partition, but don't have to... it's also a good idea to do this so you don't have to keep digging out your original CD when it's requested for installing other programs) and then copied THAT to a new CDR. Works perfectly. I've had to do this with a couple of other MS products, also.

Just for future reference, or if you find your original.

you need to read the EULA and be sure your not trying to copy the same copy of win98 on two different PCs

You are not permitted to have installed two instances of the same image (ie. an original and a backup) at the same time. In that case, you would be using the same OS-key on two different machines which is not permitted under the EULA.

Hi ktkendall.... I did read your first post, and I understand EULA. MY first post specifically said that I was making a backup. One copy can always get screwed up. I've been making backups of ALL my programs since 1983, when programs all came on floppies. My "you're not allowed to make a backup?" post was not meant as a question.
