sfc on restore CD?

Hi.. I occassionally use the sfc command from my Win98SE CD to restore a missing or corrupt file. My friend only has one of those "Restore" CDs (w. Win98). Does the sfc command function from a restore CD as well? She called and said she gets a message that her olepro.dll is missing. I think she owns a Dell... maybe an HP.

Thanks for any help

Hi cuzzzz

I imagine you may have already found good answers to your question, but just in case you haven't yet: read on.

Recovery disks aren't all the same - some have different formats and different options than others. If your friend's Recovery Disk is the sort that stores a "disk image" [an exact copy of a drive or partition], then such a disk could not be used as a "source drive" for the System File Checker in Windows 98 (because 'sfc' isn't designed to read from disk images). Unfortunately, many Recovery CDs from the Windows 98 era were only the "disk image" type.

Some OEM builders included a Windows 98 disk that was separate from the Recovery Disk --- the OEM Windows 98 disk usually can be used as a "source drive" for Windows 98's System File Checker. See if your friend has this kind of disk.

Some major-brand (OEM) builders are kind enough to put a copy of the Windows installation files (the ".cab" files) in a folder on the hard drive. Many used a location such as C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. If your friend has the installation .cabs on the hard drive, they should be able to point SFC to that location & replace the file in that way.

It is also possible to simply borrow a Win98 CD from a friend, and use that as a source drive. So long as you only use the disk to repair the current installation, that doesn't violate the license [the repaired computer will still have it's same original product key ("license")].

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Gary, thanks. No , had no replies before yours.

I had already considered your last option... I have a legitimate Win98 CD. Unfortunately, don't get too near her house that often, but will try it when i do. I'll also check out what kind of "restore" system she has, and whether the cab files are loaded on her conputer.

Thanks again, appreciate the reply.

Had you considered file transfer via floppy or even as an attachment via email?

edfair.. thanks. Had considered it, but basically rejected it. I'd have to go there anyway.. she'd never be able to put it in the right place. One of these who calls for every problem, but never tries to learn. Also, I don't have early 98 loaded on any of my computers (just 98SE and XP).

Thanks for the help
