Is OEM version of XP pro OK to use when building a new pc?
I'm wondering what happens if I need to change the MB due to a fault down the road or if I want to upgrade the MB later on - can I re-install an OEM version of XP on a new MB

Yes, if it is plain XP OEM, not OEM Dell or HP, etc.
Some of the latter will even activate. You have nothing to lose by trying. If yours is a regular XP OEM and does not activate after changing hardware, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the activation screen to call Microsoft on the telephone and explain what you have done. They will usually want assurance that you have it loaded on only one computer. -Kev
