Stuck at XP bootup screen - help !

hi

After booting as normal into XP SP2, I allowed windows update to install the most recent updates.

This kid of occurred at the same time as downloading some program updates via Firefox.

I had also uninstalled Abelton Live 6.05 (music software) and installed latest version 6.07.

And installed software synthesiser Sylenth 1.

As usual, I was nagged to restart by windows update - and eventually I did (which froze the large file downloads on Firefox.

Restarted - stuck at bootup screen (with scrolling blue light).

Tried "last know good configuration" - no joy.

Tried safe mode & undid everything I had described above (except reinstall Live 6.05) - no joy.

Tried chkdsk (with auto error fix) for system HD - no joy.

No hardware changes at all.

Any ideas ?

Is there a software utility that can check for possible cause of this e.g. corrupted system/critical file ?

Otherwise I'm going to have to reinstall again

thanks

thanks

Cured it - although I'm not sure how :?

What I had noticed is that one of my sound cards (which has a standalone module attached via F/W cable) was not registering properly - a red light remained on ("error" status), rather than green.

So I pulled out the pci card and reinserted it.

Now boots normally.

So glad I didn't have to reinstall (took me weeks to create this installation...)

I've now imaged it !
