Need XP disk for Compaq Preasario
I have a freinds Compaq laptop. This was purchased at Circuit City last September. It came load with a ton of useless software. Nonetheless it was working fine when new. Since the he deleted a lot of the software packages it now is the slowest machine on the planet!
I've run Spybot, Adaware, CCleaner, and AVG, installed all Windows XP updates but nothing seems to work. I am considering as a last resort to reload XP but this computer did not come with a disk. It has a sticker on the bottom with the XP product key. I have an XP upgarde disk can I use my disk? Compaq/HP wants to charge $25 for an XP disk. Are there any other alternatives to reload XP? I did make back-up disks when the machine was new (probably about 10-12 disks). Should I just try to reload them? |

As long as you're not sharing your product key, it's fine to use your media and the Compaq's product key.

Is an "update" disk the same as a "full" version disk?

I assume you mean "upgrade".
Yes, though it may ask to see a previous version of Windows before running a full install. If you can find an old copy of Windows 95, 98, ME or NT to insert momentarily in the drive, it will perform the same as a full installation disk. -Kev

Do I need to delete anything? |

Make sure the computer is set to boot from optical drive (CD or DVD drive) before hard drive, insert the XP CD and restart the computer. You will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD. Do so.
When prompted, select to install a fresh copy of XP unless you are trying to do a repair install, in this case bypass the first option to repair using the console and continue until you are asked again if you wish to repair previous version of XP. If you are going to do a fresh install you will lose all of your data, so (if possible) back up everything you wish to save before attempting the new installation. -Kev |

The recovery files are probably on the hard disk.
Most computers are being shipped this way. The back up to the system is placed on it's own partition, from it you can format the drive and replace the OS. |
