Fujitsu Amilo Xi 1546 repair boot.ini file?

Fujitsu Amilo Xi 1546 centrino 200GB Raid 0 XP Pro SP2 up to date.

I have managed to mess up this laptops boot.ini file.

the laptop was unstable for a while possibly because of virus. so the owner tried to reinstall XP pro over the top unsucessfully.

so when the laptop booted it would choose the bad setup as default to boot to and blue screen error out loop. a minor niggle but i wanted to get it to boot to the original install.

i tried to edit the boot.ini file to boot into the old version of XP pro which didnt work, now when it boots the laptop keeps restarting (does not boot to original XP pro after selecting it from the two choices).

i removed this part:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
and added this part:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
why? i dont know
i did make a backup of the original boot.ini file in my computer now called bootold.ini

i have tried to run bootcfg but because the laptop has a Via Raid 0 the XP setup does not recognise the drives without the Via driver which is only available on floppy to my knowledge.

this laptop does not have a floppy drive so i cant F6 to install the needed driver.

any ideas how i can repair or edit the boot.ini file so i can get back into the original XP Pro install?

can i use a USB pen drive as the floppy for F6?

already looked at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827324
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000648.htm

i read somewhere about slipstreaming a XP Pro disc with the drivers needed, but i can see me ending up with a lot of coaster DVD's, which i dont have many of.

ok got past the boot problem, managed to slipstream a XP pro CD with the drivers i couldnt load at F6, went into recovery console, tried allsorts of commands to try and rename bootold.ini to boot.ini, which didnt work.

then i came accross a fix where i released the boot file from being hidden, read only and system file to try and run boot.cfg /rebuild (which would not work)
and deleted the old boot.ini file
then found that you can rename the backup boot.ini windows makes from
boot.bak to boot.ini

problem solved.
and it only took me 12 hours
