Windows XP Shutdown Problem

I am experiencing a problem with shutting down Windows XP (Professional edition) in that when I click on the Turn Off button, all the icons in the System Tray are closed as normal but Windows will not shut down until I again click on the Turn Off button.

Unfortunately, I cannot say with certainty when this problem started, as I have installed four minor programs. These are:

Skype, Logitech WebCam, WinTools XP and Windows Desktop Search.

I suspected this last utility, as it seemed to generate a lot of HD activity, but I have uninstalled it and the problem persists. I am also assured by KinyonSoft that there is nothing in WinTools XP that would cause this problem.

My OS is fully up to date.

Has anyone any idea what might be causing my shut down problem?

There are many reasons for OS shutdown problems. You may wish to search the microsoft knowledge base for a solution.

Having said that, I would uninstall recently installed software to see if that may the problem. Also...

Do you have a disk in any of your optical drives? Many computers running XP will hang on shutdown if a disk is inserted.

Also editing startup items/services helps. If too many services/startup items are running it will prevent your computer from shutting down since it will try to end all those running processes first before it shutsdown.
