Another XP re install problem
I have completed my first build and am using my existing hard drive. It is a Maxtor. I have the BIOS booting off the CD ROM to iniate the install of the Windows XP Home Edition. It proceeds to the blue Windows set up screen but the message I get is this:
Please insert disk labeled Windows XP Home Editiion DC-ROM into Drive A: *Press Enter when ready. I am pretty much at a loss at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be great. |

Are you using a genuine Windows CD or a burned copy?

Please post the specs of your new computer. List the parts by brand and model including the power supply.
Please be specific about the type of drives you're using...IDE or SATA...and how they are set up. Are all the drives recognized by the BIOS? Do you have a floppy drive installed? Cricket

I am using a certified copy of Windows XP home addition. I am the original owner.
All the drives are recognized by the BOIS. I do have a floppy drive installed. The components used in the build are: Motherboard: ASUS M2NPV-VM series 1 GB RAM: Patriot PC2-6400 800MHZ Power Supply: Antec Earth Watts Model EA-380 Heat Sink: Thermaltake TR2-R1 Hard Drive: Maxtor 2F040J0 40 GB (Existing) The reason I went to the new configuration is because the old motherboard died. I wanted to keep the existing HDD but also wanted to upgrade to a faster motherboard and increase the RAM |

Was your floppy drive the primary drive as set up in BIOS? and did you have a WinXP floppy boot disk in the drive at the time?

No. The CD-ROM is the bootable drive. I do not have a Windows XP floppy boot disk only the original CD-ROM disk that I purchased from Microsoft.

Remove the floppy drive and disable the floppy in the BIOS.
What kind of drives do you have? SATA or IDE? Is the hard drive SATA or IDE? Is the optical drive SATA or IDE? If IDE, how is the drive jumpered? You're using a hard drive that already has Windows installed on it? If so, are you trying to do a Repair Install of WinXP? Cricket

The HDD is ATA 133HD and the jumper is set to CS enabled. The optical drive is a H.L Data Storage CD-R/RW Drive Model: GCE-8400B I cannot tell whether it is SATA or IDE but the jumper on it is also set to CS enabled. I am using a HDD that already has Windows XP Home Edition on it. Yes, I am trying to use the existing HDD without erasing everything on it. I hope that makes sense.

Are you using seperate cables for the hard drive and the optical drive or are they on the same controller?
If both are IDE try using the boot drive on IDE 1, the optical on IDE 2, be sure machine is set in BIOS to boot from CD before hard drive and be sure to save changes before exiting setup. Also, with a new m-board there may be m-board drivers required that are not yet installed. Did the board come with a floppy or CD containing drivers? -Kev

I would try downloading the diagnostic tools from maxtor and save them to a floopy.. Then boot from floopy and do a zero fill of the hd and then start all over again..

When you get _
Please insert disk labeled Windows XP Home Editiion DC-ROM into Drive A: *Press Enter when ready. Have you tried pressing enter and then when the error is posted (system couldn't find the CD in 'A'), redirecting the system to the correct drive? And/Or can you redirect the system to the CD-Rom when you get the initial error? |
