Printer Driver for windows 2000
Background:
I recently installed windows 2000 on a PC which is locally connected via a phone network card to another PC with windows NT4. The PC with windows NT4 has the printer (an HP Deskjet 722c) connected to lpt1 and I would like to share this printer with the windows 2000 PC. Within windows 2000, when I click on: add printer>network printer>browse for printer.. I get the following message: The server on which the HP Deskjet resides does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to install the driver on your local computer click OK. Then I am prompted with: File needed: Printer driver for HP deskjet... So far it is pretty standard. I assume that the driver is not compatible because the driver on the PC with the printer is for windows NT. Problem: When I go the the HP web site there is no windows 2000 printer driver available for the HP deskjet 722c. A message is given that the driver is provided within the windows 2000 operating system. The microsoft web site shows the the HP 722c printer is compatible with windows 2000. I have looked in the \winnt\inf directory and it is not obvious to me which inf file I should select. Am I looking in the proper directory? Does anyone know how to find specific drivers (without knowing the exact name) in windows 2000? |

I have 722C and it works perfect with Win2000. Actually, to install printer/driver was very easy.
When you install driver, select: "show all hardware"(that's if I remember right). There should be option: HP 722C. HTH, |

I have found reference to the error message that I received (as shown above in my first post) in the Microsoft Knowledgebase article ID: Q246855. What to they mean by \\PrintServer\Sharename? Does this article apply? If so, which situation solution should I follow?

The problem I had was sharing a printer over 2 different operating systems with incompatible drivers. It was solved by using the Microsoft workaround as described in article Q246855 instructions. In summary it allowed sharing of the printer by installing it as a local printer and then setting it up on a local port which is identified as the remote printer.
