Install XP on HD
I use to install 98 on the HD
now I am thinking of doing the same on XP-because I have to put XP on an 8GB HD and it is using like 4GB and more after updates-what is the lowest disk space to install/run XP/2? Can I just install CABS386 on HD-and if so how, do I complete the installation? Thanx |

Hi 1us18250,
Welcome to PC Mechanic !! ![]() Sorry, I think it may be time to upgrade to a larger drive. Even if you got it installed, you'd have no room to install programs. Also, being an 8 GB drive indicates an older system... listing your complete specs (make, model, etc) would help ![]() TwoRails |

Yeah, a 8GB HDD is way too small to run WinXP properly. You won't be able to install too many programs or save too many files before the hard drive goes below 15% free space and cause Windows to become unstable.

I'll put it this way: I install every thing (as in programs) to a different drive and there enough "common / shared" items that still go to the OS drive that I'm using 14 out of 21 GB...(that includes System Restore points and the like, too.)

Everything you have been told is good advice. Having said that...I ran XP PRO SP2 on an old gateway with a 5 GB hard drive for several years with no adverse effects.
Keep in mind, The only extra software loaded was simple office (2000 premium) Nero burning ROM and the obvious flash players, adobe reader, etc. And I was storing data on a seperate drive. Now that I think about it, my Mom has that computer now and it is still running nicely. She doesn't save a lot of data though... -Kev

I just checked my BetterHlaf's computer: all she does is email, surfing, few light duty games, and letters. Including the Restore Points I've done, she's at 8 GB. I bet most of that is Restore Points and family photos emailed to her.

My wife's machine, the one I'm on right now, has a 6Gb C: partition running XP Pro but I have the Page File on a separate partition and the programs and My Docs on a third. It has just over 1Gb of Free Space. Plus I clean the Restore points weekly with Disk Cleanup. It's been this way for a couple years now but I wouldn't use this configuration again. The smallest hdd/partition I would use now is 15Gb.
