make complete system backup to a file?

Can anyone give me advice on simple programs to make a complete system backup besides from norton ghost?
I need to make a backup of 3 pc's. 2 have windows 2000,1 has xp, plus ms office and some custom software we use at work. ('customer' database, agenda program etc) No data is stored on the machines, all the data is on a server.

Now when one of these pc's needs a windows reinstallation, we have to call the company that made the custom software to come and reinstall it(not windows, just their program).
If i could make a backup of the os and the programs, i can restore it completely myself.
I have an 80 gb portable usb2 hd to store the backup files on.

So i tought of norton ghost first, but latest version does not work on win2k it says in the system requirements.
I tried with an old version we still have at work (don't remember which exactly), but it comes up with a bunch of warnings about usb support, and failed to make a backup when i tried.

Is there any other software that will allow me to make a complete system backup(working on 2k and XP) to a file, and restore it (from the usb drive i guess) if something goes wrong?
