Change the name of file , changes the file

Guys I have a fresh copy of XP PRO and just finnished all the updates and have live one care and all that but when I try to change the name of any file on my system it changes it to an unusfull format , Then I cant use the file anymore. Dos anyone know what in the would thats about.

Win Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->View Tab

There are three "hide" type options you need to disable....Then when you rename a file you'll be able to see the file Extesion that shouldn't be changed.
