Computer goes off line after 10 min.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My problem is..
When i start my computer i can go on the internet as normal. But if i leave my computer for say 10 minutes and not use it. When i try to go back on the net, a box appears which reads.

"No connection to the internet is currently available. To view content on computer click "work offline"
Click "Try again" to attempt to connect"

So i click "try again" and i am connected to the internet. I can now access any internet site . But if i leave my computer again for 10 minutes or so i go through the same situation where a box appears.
Whats the deal?

I am using XP Home SP2 and using IE6 I have a computer that I built myself and I have one I built for my wife, both are having this problem. I have a DSL service from Verizon.

You must have a disconnect from the net service active. If it's a modem check the settings for the time interval where it will disconnect from the internet if inactive, some routers have similar settings.

some sites keeps your internet connection active i.e. yahoo or cnn w/c gets updated 'every' moment. Open a tab/browser with these link keeps your internet connection. Some firewall also do the same thing.

Check the power management settings of your network adapter. The computer may be turning it off to save power.

I am sorry that I forgot to say I have already done that. Someone told me that it might be IE7causing the trouble so I went back to IE6. It did not help.

Either your ISP is disconnecting you after the time period for lack of activity or the modem and/or router settings are disconnecting you for no activity. Check there.

The people at the ISP (Verizon) said it is not them and that it must be the router. The people at the Linksys help center said it is not them and they spent an hour on the phone with me running every test they had.

I have checked every setting that I think might have caused this and can't find anything unusual. Both computers are doing the same thing.

Maybe I should just "live with it".

If you are using a 3rd party router with a DSL modem, the modem should be in the "bridge" mode and you set up the router for PPPoE, store your login in the router, and set it for "keep alive".

I don't know if the modem is in the bridge mode or not. I know that if I try to bypass the router and run the cat5 cable to the computer the computer will not work. I do not know how to set the router to "stay alive". Sorry for being so dumb about this.

The girl I talked with at Linksys sure seemed to know her stuff and she did not think the trouble was in the router but she said even if it was out of warranty and I did not have proof of purchase it did not matter they would send me another one no charge.

Verizon was just knocking on my door trying to get me to switch over to fiber DSL which is much faster but it is $10.00 more per month and I am happy with the 768 speed I have now. I am not happy with this trouble I'm having.

What would happen if you set your e-mail client to check for mail every 5 minutes or so?

try outlook express>tools>options>on the general tab you'll see about 3/4 way down>"check for new messages every--" choose 5 mins
but you need outlook minimized or running to get it to check..

for what its worth my Dell laptop has a problem similar to this but it is actually a streaming problem that is driver related by broadcom and they will do nothing about it.

maybe if you have built the PC's yourself you could check with either the motherboard or network port manufacturer (if its connected by cable) that you have the latest driver installed

how does verizon arrive at your house? sorry i dont know how verzion works

also have you tried running anti spyware and anti virus software lately?

and to rule out the router, could you beg borrow or steal another type of router from a friend and see if it does the same thing?? even try with their laptop at your place too

I did not notice it before but I had my OE options set to check for e-mail every 5 min even if I am off line but thanks for the tip.

I had called Verizon and they went over everything and said it must be the router. I wish I had someone with a router that I could borrow. I will call my friends and see if I can find one.

It seems everyone but me is using wireless routers.

I will check the drivers for the motherboard and such but I would have thought someone would have had the same problem as me and knew the answer.

Thanks Gary

is verizon a cable service or does it come down the phone line? im in UK so i dont know how it work in US

hey and it doesnt matter if they are using wireless routers they will 99% of the time have LAN ports on the back for you to connect to but they need to be happy about changing settings inside the routers interface and then back again to there original settings so they dont screw up there own connection.

you can usually print them off the ISP's website for use later on

Verizon is a regular phone line that they superimpose a digital data stream to it at the Central Office so when it gets to your house you can talk on the phone or use the internet at the same time. My speed is 768kbps which is pretty good.

Something is causeing my internet to shut down if I am not using it for 10 min or so and I have no idea what is doing it.

lostplanet - his Verizon is what you UK folks call ADSL and it uses PPPoE.

Gary, did disabling the Comodo fix this too? If you can get fiber for only 10 bucks more a month, this is a no brainer. What are you waiting for?

Have you tried bypassing your router all together? Connect one of your machines to the modem directly and see what happens. That may settle the “whose fault is it” debate between Verizon and Linksys.

In my case, once you use a router you cannot go back to plugging the modem into the computer. The computer won't work. I think that the modem goes into what they call the bridged mode.

I haven't gone with the fiber yet because when I do I want to get the TV part also and I am going to do that in October. I have Directv now and I want to use it when I go on a trip in October. I have a travel trailer.

My computer no longer goes off after I have been away from it for ten minuntes.

If the modem is in the bridged mode, for future reference you can use the builtin XP PPPoE client to test with if you connect direct. Just run the new connection wizard, choose broadband that requires a username and password.

Thanks
I did not know that but I kew that you would know. I have been on the phone with Verizon many times and they wanted me to bypass the router when they were trying to fix something and I told them It would not work that way. It's funny they don't know that. Of course they are just reading from scripts that are in front of them.

The other day when I called Verizon about my e-mail the tech said she was in the Phillippines and it was 4 AM. They used to be in California.
