Unable to save server settings in thunderbird email

I am posting here in win98se because I had to reinstall win98se onto a new hdd and since have been unable to get thunderbird email ver 1.5 and 2.0 to save my server settings. After following setting tutorials and searching Thunderbird Mozilla Help, I am wondering if anyone here has come across this issue and is it more a win98se issue? My service provider is ATT DSL alias SBCGLOBAL.
I set pop.att.yahoo.com and SSL port 995 and smpt.att.yahoo.com, port 465 ssl, use secure authentication for out going mail. Now I can download email. After closing program and reopening it port settings revert to 110 and 25, server name is changed to 127.00??? Any one familiar with this problem?

What should email settings be in AVAST? Did not even know there might be a link between the
being unable to save email settings and AVAST Email settings?

Some antiviruses act as a full proxy and the server settings have to be configured in the antivirus. I remember when Norton did this - it would reset the servers in the email program to 127.0.0.1.
